Updated COBRA Model Notices

May 6, 2014

updated cobra model noticesThe Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) provides employees the right to continue their health care coverage. Employers should be aware that updated COBRA model notices have recently been released by the Department of Labor. Employers are required to distribute these notices, which inform employees that if they are eligible for COBRA coverage when leaving a job, they have the option to instead purchase coverage through the Affordable Care Act’s Health Insurance Marketplace.

Employers should download the model general notice and the model election notice; there is also an updated model notice regarding the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and premium assistance under Medicaid.

A special enrollment period in the Marketplace is available for employees already enrolled in COBRA and for COBRA qualified beneficiaries.
