Disability Insurance for Business

When employees become ill or disabled and unable to work, their jobs might be protected, but they’re often left with no replacement income.

To help individuals in this situation, several states, including New York, provide, or require that employers provide, short-term disability insurance to eligible workers.

This benefit pays a percentage of an eligible employee’s income if the employee becomes disabled because of an off-the-job injury or illness.

As this temporary disability insurance covers non-work-related injuries, illnesses, or disabilities, it is different than workers’ compensation.

A disability is considered an illness or injury, either physical or mental, which prevents an employee from performing their regular and customary work.

This can include elective surgery, pregnancy, childbirth, back pain, depression, mental health conditions, digestive disorders, and other related medical conditions.
