Following the midterm elections last Tuesday, several more states – and two cities – are set for minimum wage increases for 2015. Employers – including household employers – in all states must pay their employees at least this new hourly wage (there are some exceptions). The following list shows the states that are changing their minimum wage laws and the hourly amount, effective January 1, 2015:
Alaska: $8.75
Arkansas: $7.50
Connecticut: $9.15
Hawaii: $7.75
Maryland: $8.00 (increasing again to $8.25 on July 1, 2015)
Massachusetts: $9.00
Nebraska: $8.00
New York: $8.75 (takes effect December 31, 2014)
Rhode Island: $9.00
South Dakota: $8.50
Vermont: $9.15
West Virginia: $8.00 (takes effect December 31, 2014)
In California, employers in both San Francisco and Oakland will need to comply with additional minimum wage laws, as follows:
San Francisco: $12.25, effective May 1, 2015
Oakland: $12.25, effective March 1, 2015
