Laws regarding employment of household workers vary from state to state.

Connecticut Rules

Minimum Wage: In Connecticut, the current minimum wage is $16.94/hour.

Overtime Rules: Household employees in Connecticut are required to be paid at least time and a half for hours worked over 40 in a seven-day workweek. Overtime compensation is not required for live-in employees and isn’t required when work is performed on a holiday.

Workers’ Compensation: In Connecticut, household employers are required to carry workers’ compensation insurance if their employees work 26 or more hours per week. Get a quote on workers' compensation from GTM.

Paid Leave Laws: In Connecticut, household employers must follow the state’s Paid Family and Medical Leave program.

New Jersey Rules

Current Minimum Wage: In New Jersey, the current minimum wage is $15.23/hour for employers with fewer than 6 employees.

Overtime Rules: Household employees, including live-in workers, in New Jersey must be paid at least time-and-a-half for hours worked over 40 in a seven-day workweek. Overtime compensation is not required when work is performed on a holiday.

New York Rules

For home health care aides, the rate is $19.65/hour (New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County) and $18.65hour for the rest of the state. 

Overtime Rules: Household employees in New York must be paid at least time-and-a-half for hours worked over 40 in a seven-day workweek (or more than 44 hours in a week for live-in employees). Overtime compensation is not required when work is performed on a holiday.
