Understand State Household Employment Laws
Household employers in Michigan must pay nannies and household workers according to state regulations:
- Minimum Wage: in Michigan, the current minimum wage is $10.10/hour.
- Workers’ Compensation: in Michigan, household employers are required to have a workers’ compensation policy for any household domestic worker except those employed for less than 35 hours per week for 13 weeks or longer during the preceding 52 weeks. Contact GTM for a quote.
- Overtime Rules: hourly employees in Michigan are entitled to a special overtime pay rate of at least 1.5 times their regular hourly wage for all overtime worked, if they work over 40 hours in a week. Overtime is not required for live-in employees.
