Here is a brief overview of 2016 household employment laws.<\/p>\n<h2>Minimum Wage<\/h2>\n<p>Minimum wage changes have already\u00a0occurred in several states, with others to come later this year.\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/gtm.com\/household\/2016-minimum-wage-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">following list<\/a> shows the states that have 2016 minimum wage changes and when those changes are effective.<\/p>\n<h2>Mileage Rate<\/h2>\n<p>The <a title=\"2016 Standard Mileage Rate Announced\" href=\"https:\/\/gtm.com\/household\/2016-standard-mileage-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">standard mileage rate<\/a> changed on January 1st of this year to\u00a054 cents per mile for business miles driven, a decrease of 3.5 cents from 2015. Household employers affected by this change should make sure to revise their expense reports and policies accordingly.<\/p>\n<h2>Nanny Tax Threshold<\/h2>\n<p>Also note that for 2016, the domestic employee coverage threshold amount has\u00a0increased to $2,000, up from $1,900 last\u00a0year; this means that you are required to pay taxes if you pay a nanny or other household employee at least $2,000 in a\u00a0year. For those employees that earn more than $200,000 in a year, employers are required to pay an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/businesses\/small-businesses-self-employed\/questions-and-answers-for-the-additional-medicare-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">additional Medicare tax<\/a> of 0.9 percent.<\/p>\n<h2>Domestic Worker Rights<\/h2>\n<p>One thing to keep an eye on this year is the proposed Domestic Workers\u2019 Bill of Rights in Illinois. There is current legislation pending for this new law, which would follow along the same lines as the laws passed in New York, California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Oregon, and Connecticut.
