(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-drop\/rr-02-19.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">IRS Revenue Ruling 2002-19<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this ruling, individuals could only claim a tax deduction for weight loss to treat a condition &#8220;associated&#8221; with obesity (such as high blood pressure) &#8212; not the obesity itself.<\/p>\n<p>But as usual with tax breaks, there are a few conditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Deductible weight-loss treatments<\/b> include bariatric surgery, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerwatch.com\/drug-information\/fda-approved-drugs\/therapeutic-area\/27\/nutrition-and-weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\">FDA-approved weight-loss drugs<\/a>, doctor and hospital-based programs, behavioral and diet counseling, and nutritionists. But you must have a doctor&#8217;s diagnosis before weight-loss expenses can be deducted.<\/li>\n<li><b>Expenses related to general health<\/b>, such as health club dues, nutritional supplements, diet foods or exercise equipment, are not deductible \u2013 unless they&#8217;re related to a doctor&#8217;s diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li><b>Fees for weight reduction programs<\/b>, such as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, are potentially deductible.
