These often include families with household help like nannies, housekeepers, and senior caregivers.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what household employers need to know.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Minimum wage rate on the rise<\/h2>\n<p>Household employees need to be paid at least <a href=\"https:\/\/gtm.com\/household\/learning-library\/minimum-wage-rates\/\">minimum wage<\/a>, which will be the highest of the federal, state, or local rates. Several states and cities have increased their minimum wage rates for July 1.<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; Alameda: $17\/hour<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; Berkeley: $18.07\/hour<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; Emeryville: $19.36\/hour<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; Freemont: $17.30\/hour<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; Los Angeles (city): $17.28\/hour<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; Los Angeles (county): $17.27\/hour<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; Malibu: $17.27\/hour<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; Milpitas: $17.70\/hour<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; Pasadena: $17.50<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; Redwood City: $17.70\/hour<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; Richmond: $17.20\/hour<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; San Francisco: $18.67\/hour<\/p>\n<p>California &#8211; Santa Monica: $17.28\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Maryland &#8211; Howard County: $16\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Minnesota &#8211; Minneapolis: $15.57\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Nevada: $12\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Oregon &#8211; Portland: $15.95\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Washington, DC: $17.50\/hour<\/p>\n<p>Also, household employees need to be paid at least time-and-a-half for hours worked over 40 in a work week.<\/p>\n<p>As of July 1, there will be a single rate of $12\/hour in Nevada as the state will eliminate its two-tiered minimum wage system based on whether health benefits are offered.<\/p>\n<p>Get a complete list of <a href=\"https:\/\/gtm.com\/household\/learning-library\/minimum-wage-rates\/\">minimum wage rates for household employees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>2. New Jersey implements new domestic worker protections<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/gtm.com\/household\/new-jersey-domestic-workers-bill-of-rights\/\">New Jersey Domestic Workers\u2019 Bill of Rights<\/a> will go into effect in July.<\/p>\n<p>The law will provide a range of rights and employment protections for household employees, including wage protections, anti-discrimination and anti-harassment rights, health and safety protections, and privacy rights.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the new domestic worker protection requirements for employers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work agreements<\/li>\n<li>Meal and rest breaks<\/li>\n<li>Wage protections<\/li>\n<li>Termination notice<\/li>\n<li>Privacy rights<\/li>\n<li>Anti-harassment and retaliation protections<\/li>\n<li>Notice of rights<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For additional information, read <a href=\"https:\/\/gtm.com\/household\/new-jersey-domestic-workers-bill-of-rights\/\">New Jersey Household Employees Gain Protections with Domestic Workers\u2019 Bill of Rights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>3. New York City requires Workers&#8217; Bill of Rights notice<\/h2>\n<p>On July 1, all New York City employers \u2013 including families with household help \u2013 must post the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dca\/workers\/worker-rights.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cKnow Your Rights at Work\u201d poster<\/a>\u00a0in a location visible to their employees.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"\" title=\"The Workers\u2019 Bill of Rights\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dca\/workers\/workersrights\/know-your-worker-rights.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">The Workers\u2019 Bill of Rights<\/a>\u00a0is meant to serve as a comprehensive guide to rights in the workplace in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>The notice must also be distributed directly to employees.<\/p>\n<p>Download the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dca\/workers\/worker-rights.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Know Your Rights at Work&#8221; poster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Chicago increases paid leave requirements<\/h2>\n<p>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/gtm.com\/household\/chicago-paid-sick-leave-ordinance\/\">Chicago Paid Sick Leave Ordinance<\/a> will go into effect on July 1 after a several-month delay. The city already requires paid sick leave, but this new law will double the amount of leave available to employees \u2013 including domestic workers \u2013 making it one of the most generous policies in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>Household employees working in Chicago will now get ten days of paid leave \u2013 five for sick leave and five for any reason.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gtm.com\/household\/chicago-paid-sick-leave-ordinance\/\">Read more about the Chicago Paid Leave Ordinance<\/a>, including reasons for leave, accruals, and more.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Washington, D.C. requires pay transparency<\/h2>\n<p>On June 30, <a href=\"https:\/\/gtm.com\/household\/washington-dc-pay-transparency\/\">Washington DC&#8217;s pay transparency law<\/a>\u00a0will go into effect.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation will require employers with at least one employee in the District \u2013 including household employers \u2013 to provide pay ranges in all public job postings and inform job applicants of healthcare benefits associated with the position while prohibiting employers from seeking information about a job applicant\u2019s salary history. Employers must post a notice in the workplace notifying employees of their rights under the Wage Transparency Act.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gtm.com\/household\/washington-dc-pay-transparency\/\">Read more about Washington D.C.&#8217;s pay transparency law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>6. Rhode Island includes household employees in the state&#8217;s minimum wage rate<\/h2>\n<p>Household employees in Rhode Island now must be paid the state&#8217;s minimum wage under a bill just signed into law by Gov. Daniel McKee.Domestic workers in Rhode Island didn&#8217;t have that protection as they weren\u2019t considered employees. The new law removes a provision that classifies \u201cany individual employed in domestic service or in or about a private home\u201d as not an employee, as it applies to the state&#8217;s minimum wage laws.<\/p>\n<p>Before this new law, domestic workers in Rhode Island were only guaranteed the federal minimum wage of $7.25\/hour. The state&#8217;s minimum wage is currently $14\/hour and will increase to $15\/hour on January 1, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The new law goes into effect immediately.<\/p>\n<h2>7. Colorado restricts age-related inquiries during hiring process<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/sb23-058\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Job Application Fairness Act<\/a> takes effect in Colorado on July 1. The new law prohibits employers \u2013 including families with household help \u2013 from inquiring about a job applicant\u2019s age during the hiring process.<\/p>\n<p>Employers can&#8217;t inquire about an applicant\u2019s age, date of birth, or dates of attendance at or graduation from an educational institution. If employers request that applicants provide application materials \u2013 such as transcripts or graduation certificates \u2013 they must notify applicants that they may redact information that identifies their age, date of birth, or school attendance or graduation.<\/p>\n<p>If the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment finds an employer violated the law, the employer may be penalized.<u><\/u><\/p>\n<h2>GTM can help<\/h2>\n<p>Household employment can be complex.
