Legally paid nannies and other household employees could apply for extended benefits if they qualify.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a major expansion of unemployment insurance benefits, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gtm.com\/business\/cares-act-for-businesses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CARES Act<\/a> has extended unemployment insurance coverage to eligible individuals for weeks of full unemployment, partial unemployment, or the inability to work, between January 27, 2020 and December 30, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Nannies and other household employees who are eligible and <em><strong>being paid legally<\/strong><\/em> can apply for benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Unemployment benefits are available to household employees who:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or are experiencing symptoms and seeking a diagnosis;<\/li>\n<li>Have a family member with COVID-19; or<\/li>\n<li>As a result of COVID-19:\n<ul>\n<li>have a child who is unable to attend school;<\/li>\n<li>are unable to reach work because of a quarantine imposed;<\/li>\n<li>are unable to attend work because they have been advised by a health care worker to self-quarantine;<\/li>\n<li>were scheduled to begin work but no longer have a job or are unable to reach work;<\/li>\n<li>have become the head of household or breadwinner;<\/li>\n<li>are forced to quit their job; or<\/li>\n<li>have their place of employment closed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The CARES Act provides for weekly benefits of $600 for four months (funded by the federal government), <em><strong>in addition to<\/strong><\/em> the weekly benefit amounts authorized under state law.<\/p>\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/labor.ny.gov\/benefit-rate-calculator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a nanny in New York who makes $1,000\/week<\/a> ($52k\/annually or $13k\/quarter) could receive $1,100\/week in unemployment benefits ($500 from New York State + $600 from the federal government).
