This will be the highest of the federal, state or local rates. The federal rate of $7.25\/hour hasn\u2019t changed for quite some time. However, many states, counties, and cities have much higher rates.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these rates will increase in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the 2020 minimum wage rates effective January 1 that are relevant to household employers. The New York State minimum wage rates increase on December 31, 2019. We\u2019ll also note when a minimum wage is scheduled to increase during the year.<\/p>\n<h2>Alabama<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour \u2013 No state minimum wage rate. The federal rate applies.<\/p>\n<h3>Birmingham<\/h3>\n<p>$10.10\/hour.<\/p>\n<h2>Alaska<\/h2>\n<p>$10.19\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Arizona<\/h2>\n<p>$12\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Arkansas<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour \u2013 The federal rate will applies to household employers with fewer than four employees. The state rate of $10\/hour applies for employers with four or more employees.<\/p>\n<h2>California<\/h2>\n<p>$12\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020, for employers with 25 or fewer employees. This rate will increase $1\/hour every year until it hits $15\/hour in 2023.<\/p>\n<h3>City-specific rates<\/h3>\n<p>See the chart below for local rates that exceed the state&#8217;s minimum wage.<\/p>\n<h2>Colorado<\/h2>\n<p>$12\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Connecticut<\/h2>\n<p>$10.10\/hour \u2013 Increases to $12\/hour on September 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Delaware<\/h2>\n<p>$9.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>District of Columbia<\/h2>\n<p>$14\/hour \u2013 Increases to $15\/hour on July 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Florida<\/h2>\n<p>$8.56\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Georgia<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour \u2013 The state\u2019s minimum wage rate of $5.15\/hour doesn\u2019t apply to household employees as it is below the federal rate.<\/p>\n<h2>Hawaii<\/h2>\n<p>$10.10\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Idaho<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Illinois<\/h2>\n<p>$9.25\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020. Increases to $10\/hour on July 1, 2020. Then the rate will increase by $1\/hour every January 1 until it reaches $15\/hour in 2025.<\/p>\n<h3>Chicago<\/h3>\n<p>$13\/hour \u2013 Increases on July 1, 2020, based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI).<\/p>\n<h3>Cook County (outside of Chicago)<\/h3>\n<p>$12\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Indiana<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Iowa<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Kansas<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Kentucky<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Louisiana<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour \u2013 No state minimum wage rate. The federal rate applies.<\/p>\n<h2>Maine<\/h2>\n<p>$12\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Maryland<\/h2>\n<p>$11\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020. Increases $0.60\/hour every January 1 until 2026. On July 1, 2026, the rate increases to $15\/hour.<\/p>\n<h3>Montgomery County<\/h3>\n<p>$12.50\/hour \u2013 For employers with 10 or fewer employees. Increases to $13\/hour on July 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h3>Prince George County<\/h3>\n<p>$11.50\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Massachusetts<\/h2>\n<p>$12.75\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020. Increases to $13.50\/hour in 2021, $14.25\/hour in 2022, and $15\/hour in 2023.<\/p>\n<h2>Michigan<\/h2>\n<p>$9.65\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Minnesota<\/h2>\n<p>$8.15\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020, for small employers.<\/p>\n<h3>Minneapolis<\/h3>\n<p>$11\/hour \u2013 for employers with 100 or fewer employees. Increases to $11.75\/hour on July 1, 2020, $12.50\/hour in 2021, $13.50 in 2022, $14.50 in 2023, and $15\/hour in 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>Mississippi<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour \u2013 No state minimum wage rate. The federal rate applies.<\/p>\n<h2>Missouri<\/h2>\n<p>$9.45\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020. Increases $10.30\/hour in 2021, $11.15\/hour in 2022, and $12\/hour in 2023.<\/p>\n<h2>Montana<\/h2>\n<p>$8.65\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Nebraska<\/h2>\n<p>$9\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Nevada<\/h2>\n<p>$8.25 (without employee health benefits); $7.25\/hour (with qualified employee health benefits) \u2013 Increases to $9\/hour and $8\/hour on July 1, 2020, $9.75\/hour and $8.75\/hour in 2021, $10.50\/hour and $9.50\/hour in 2022; $11.25\/hour and $10.25\/hour in 2023, and $12\/hour and $11\/hour in 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>New Hampshire<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour \u2013 No state minimum wage rate. The federal rate applies.<\/p>\n<h2>New Jersey<\/h2>\n<p>$10.30\/hour \u2013 Applies to employers with less than six employees. For employers with six or more employees, the rate is $11\/hour.<\/p>\n<h2>New Mexico<\/h2>\n<p>$9\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h3>Albuquerque<\/h3>\n<p>$9.20\/hour<\/p>\n<h3>Bernalillo County<\/h3>\n<p>$9.20\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h3>Las Cruces<\/h3>\n<p>$10.25\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h3>Santa Fe<\/h3>\n<p>$11.80\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>New York<\/h2>\n<p>$11.80\/hour \u2013 Effective December 31, 2019.<\/p>\n<h3>New York City<\/h3>\n<p>$15\/hour \u2013 Effective December 31, 2019, for employers with 10 or fewer employees.<\/p>\n<h3>Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester Counties<\/h3>\n<p>$13\/hour \u2013 Effective December 31, 2019.<\/p>\n<h2>North Carolina<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>North Dakota<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Ohio<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour \u2013 Ohio has a special minimum wage for businesses with annual gross receipts of more than $319,000 per year ($8.70\/hour effective January 1, 2020). However, household employers follow the lower rate.<\/p>\n<h2>Oklahoma<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Oregon<\/h2>\n<p>To determine which rate applies to your county, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/boli\/whd\/omw\/pages\/minimum-wage-rate-summary.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oregon Minimum Wage Rate Summary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Portland<\/h3>\n<p>$12.50\/hour \u2013 Increases to $13.25\/hour on July 1, 2020; $14\/hour in 2021; and $14.75\/hour in 2022.<\/p>\n<h3>Standard<\/h3>\n<p>$11.25\/hour \u2013 Increases to $12\/hour on July 1, 2020; $12.75\/hour in 2021; and $13.50\/hour in 2022.<\/p>\n<h3>Non-urban counties<\/h3>\n<p>$11\/hour \u2013 Increases to $11.50\/hour on July 1, 2020; $12\/hour in 2021; and $12.50\/hour in 2022.<\/p>\n<h2>Pennsylvania<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Rhode Island<\/h2>\n<p>$10.50\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>South Carolina<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour \u2013 No state minimum wage rate. The federal rate applies.<\/p>\n<h2>South Dakota<\/h2>\n<p>$9.30\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Tennessee<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour \u2013 No state minimum wage rate. The federal rate applies.<\/p>\n<h2>Texas<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Utah<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Vermont<\/h2>\n<p>$10.96\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Virginia<\/h2>\n<p>$7.25\/hour<\/p>\n<h2>Washington<\/h2>\n<p>$13.50\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<h3>Seattle<\/h3>\n<p>$15.75\/hour \u2013 Effective January 1, 2020, for employers with 500 or fewer employees.
