There are many advantages to staying put in retirement However, to \u201cage in place,\u201d some seniors may need help with basic tasks that have become difficult as they grow older.<\/p><\/div>\n

Many middle-aged and older Americans plan to \u201cage in place\u201d when they reach retirement and beyond. In a recent retirement survey by USA Today<\/a>, 43 percent of \u201c45- to 65-year-olds anticipate remaining in their current residence throughout their retirement.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are many advantages to staying put.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vast majority of older adults want to stay in their communities,\u201d says Rodney Harrell, director of livability thought leadership for AARP. \u201cThey want to be near their church\u201d and friends.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

However, to \u201cage in place,\u201d some seniors may need help with basic tasks that have become difficult as they grow older.<\/p>\n

These may include medical and nonmedical services such as financial planning and management, companionship, home safety, meal preparation, personal care, and transportation.<\/p>\n

Sometimes a family will take on caregiver responsibilities themselves. They may do this to try and save money by caring for their elderly loved ones on their own. But this can place a toll on balancing work and life commitments around attending to the needs of the senior. Also, the logistics of being the senior caregiver, time demands, and elevated stress often times becomes too much for a family to handle.<\/p>\n

Doing it themselves also requires family members to be close by, which is not always the case.<\/p>\n

According to the USA Today survey, \u201cof the Americans who plan to pull up stakes, 42% say they\u2019ll head to a different state while 22% plan to get another home in-state.\u201d By moving, some seniors may not have family around to help with their care.<\/p>\n

Families have options when hiring senior care for an elderly loved one. They can go through a home health care agency, a referral or placement agency, or hire independently.<\/p>\n
