Household Employment Laws in Your State

Here are some current laws in your state regarding employment of household workers:

  • Minimum Wage: In Minnesota, the current minimum wage is $8.63/hour.
  • Workers’ Compensation: In Minnesota, workers’ comp insurance is required if an employee earns more than $1,000 in a quarter.
  • Overtime Rules: Hourly employees in Minnesota are entitled to a special overtime pay rate of at least 1.5 times their regular hourly wage for all overtime worked, if they work more than 40 hours in a week. Overtime is also required for live-in employees if they work more than 48 hours in a week.
