\"massachusettsA new Massachusetts paid family and medical leave program<\/a>, which will be funded by a payroll tax, becomes effective July 1, 2019.\u00a0Employees can begin taking paid family and medical leave under the program in 2021. A summary of the program is below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Which employers are covered?<\/b><\/td>\nEmployers with one<\/strong>\u00a0or more employees<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Which individuals are eligible for leave?<\/b><\/td>\nEmployees who meet financial eligibility requirements for unemployment insurance (earned at least $4,700 during the last four completed calendar quarters, and 30 times the weekly benefit amount they would be eligible to collect)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Which life events qualify for leave?<\/b><\/td>\n\n
    \n
  • The birth of a child;<\/li>\n
  • The need to care for a family member with a serious health condition; and<\/li>\n
  • The employee\u2019s own serious health condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
How long can leave last?<\/b><\/td>\n\n
    \n
  • Up to 12 weeks in a year for the birth of a child or to care for a family member with a serious health condition.<\/li>\n
  • Up to 20 weeks in a year for the serious health condition of the employee.<\/li>\n
  • If an employee elects to use leave for more than one life event, 26 weeks in a year at most.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Who pays for the paid leave?<\/b><\/td>\nBoth the employer and the employee. The leave program will be funded by a 0.63% payroll tax split between employers and employees that becomes effective\u00a0July 1, 2019<\/b>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
